We are delighted to share some exciting news with our Futures community—many of you may have already met Ember, the newest member of our team.
Ember is our therapy dog in training, and she will be joining us as part of our ongoing commitment to providing a relational and therapeutic environment for our young people.
Why a Therapy Dog?
Therapy dogs can play a powerful role within educational settings, particularly for young people who may benefit from additional emotional support. Research and practice consistently show that therapy dogs can help to:
Support emotional regulation
Reduce anxiety and stress
Encourage positive social interaction
Create a calm and reassuring presence
At Futures, we are always exploring meaningful ways to support wellbeing, and Ember is a wonderful addition to this work.
Ember’s Training Journey
Over the coming months, Ember will be undertaking structured therapy dog training with both local and national organisations. This training is an important step in ensuring she develops the calm, confident temperament needed to work safely and effectively alongside young people.
During this period, Ember will be gradually introduced to the provision. This allows her to become familiar with the environment, including the sounds, routines, and people she will encounter.
How Ember Will Be Introduced
To ensure the safety and wellbeing of both our students and Ember, her introduction will be carefully managed:
Ember will primarily remain in the management office, resting in her crate, which serves as her safe and quiet space
She will only enter the main provision area when accompanied by a member of staff, on a lead and harness
Any interaction with students will be supervised and introduced slowly as part of her training
This gradual approach helps Ember feel secure while also ensuring that all interactions are positive and appropriate.
Safety and Assurance
We understand that introducing an animal into an educational setting is something families may have questions about. Please be reassured that:
Comprehensive risk assessments have been completed
Appropriate insurance arrangements are in place
All steps are being taken in line with best practice
The training period is essential in ensuring that Ember’s role is developed thoughtfully, safely, and with the wellbeing of everyone in mind.
