At Futures-Essex, the wellbeing of the young people we work with is at the heart of everything we do. That’s why we welcome the new Southend, Essex and Thurrock (SET) Mental Health Strategy 2023–28, which sets out a shared vision to improve mental health support across our communities.
Why this strategy matters
Poor mental health affects 1 in 6 children and young people, and the demand for services has grown significantly in recent years. The strategy recognises the impact of trauma, disadvantage and exclusion—factors many of our young people experience first-hand. It also makes clear that prevention, early help and joined-up care are essential to breaking cycles of poor outcomes.
Key priorities for young people
The strategy identifies several areas of focus that directly relate to our work at Futures-Essex:
Early help and prevention – More services in schools and communities to support young people before needs escalate.
Crisis support – Better pathways to ensure young people get timely help in urgent situations.
Transitions (18–25) – Stronger support as young people move from children’s to adult services.
Eating disorders and specialist needs – Continued investment in tailored services.
Digital access – Using technology to make services more accessible, while ensuring no young person is left behind.
What this means for Futures-Essex
For us, the strategy is both reassuring and motivating. It reinforces the importance of the relational and therapeutic approach we already take, recognising that recovery is not just about treatment, but about giving young people the chance to live with purpose, connection, and opportunity.
It also gives us a stronger platform to advocate for the young people in our care—ensuring their voices are heard, their needs are met, and their strengths are celebrated.
Looking ahead
The SET strategy is about more than services—it’s about creating communities where young people feel safe, valued, and supported to thrive. At Futures-Essex, we’re proud to play our part in making this vision a reality.
